Why a Rough Sketch Can Be More Valuable Than a Polished Rendering
A rough sketch can sometimes tell an admissions tutor more than a polished rendering.
The rendering shows what you decided. The sketch can reveal how you arrived there.
Imagine a student designing a space inspired by the movement of dancers. The final rendering may show a beautiful flowing interior. But an early pencil drawing with quick lines tracing balance, tension and direction reveals the observation that generated the architecture.
So, why a Rough Sketch Can Be More Valuable Than a Polished Rendering?
That does not mean presentation quality is unimportant. It means polish should not erase thought. In an architecture school portfolio, the strongest final image is often supported by sketches, diagrams, models and experiments that make the journey visible.
Admissions teams are not only looking for someone who can produce an attractive image. They are trying to recognize curiosity, sensitivity, decision-making and the potential to learn.
Do not discard every imperfect sketch. Ask instead: does this drawing reveal something important that the finished image cannot?
