Your professional architecture portfolio must be specific to each job description. Sometimes you will need to change the cover for every application, depending on the position or the character of the office. However, there are several important things that you should always have prepared in your portfolio if you want to secure a strong position in almost any architecture firm.

8 Things to Show in a Professional Architecture Portfolio to Get a Job Immediately! Online Architecture portfolio tutoring with Moshe Katz Architect
  1. Show that you can solve and execute a complex floor plan. A firm needs to see that you can organize different functions, circulation, entrances, cores, structure and technical requirements within one clear and well-developed architectural plan.

  2. Show that you can solve a parking plan for a project. Parking may not be the most exciting part of architecture, but it is part of real professional work. Demonstrating that you understand parking layouts, ramps, structural grids, turning areas, entrances and connections to the building shows that you can deal with practical architectural problems.

  3. Show that you can resolve the relationship between a complex project and its environment. Present how the building connects to the surrounding lot, streets, landscape, pedestrian movement, entrances, service access and neighbouring buildings. The firm must understand that you can design not only the building, but also everything that happens around it.

  4. Show that you can solve the technical, structural and construction details of your project. Demonstrate that you understand how the building stands, how it is constructed, which materials it is made of and how those materials connect. Your sections, details and visualizations should make the project look realistic and physically possible.

  5. Show that you can prepare a building-permit submission or that you have experience with parts of the process. This may include area calculations, project data, regulation diagrams, accessibility requirements or other information required by the municipality. Even partial experience in this area can show that you understand how architecture moves from design into real professional procedures.

  6. Show that you can become part of an architectural competition team. Firms need people who can produce radical visions, powerful concepts, creative diagrams and amazing graphic presentations. Take one of your older university projects and present it again as if it were an architectural competition. Create a stronger concept, a memorable main image and professional competition posters that demonstrate your creative thinking and visual abilities.

  7. Show that you understand the needs of clients and municipalities. Architecture is not created only from the architect’s personal vision. You must demonstrate that you can consider the client’s programme, budget and expectations while also responding to municipal regulations and public needs.

  8. Show that you are an interesting person whom people would be happy to have in the office every day. Firms are not only choosing your skills; they are choosing you as a person and as a future colleague. Show that you are curious, inspiring and capable of contributing something unique to the office. Ideally, they should feel that they could learn something from you as well.
