Transdisciplinary Design: Learning to Think Between Worlds

For most of my life as an architect, artist, author and educator, I have never experienced architecture as an isolated discipline. I have always been more interested in what happens when architecture meets something else: music, movement, light, technology, biology, psychology, philosophy, art or even a simple everyday phenomenon. For me, the most interesting ideas rarely belong completely to one field. They usually appear somewhere in between.


This is the foundation of my approach to transdisciplinary design. It is not simply about combining several disciplines inside one project. It is about developing a different kind of mind: a mind that moves between worlds, recognizes hidden relationships and translates principles from one field into another. I believe this ability will become one of the most important forms of intelligence in the future.


Traditional education has been organized around separation. Architecture belongs to one department, engineering to another, art somewhere else, while music, technology, psychology, philosophy and business are taught within their own independent territories. This structure can create expertise, but the world itself does not behave this way. Reality is transdisciplinary.


A city is simultaneously architecture, infrastructure, sociology, economics, psychology, technology, ecology and culture. A home is not simply an arrangement of rooms and materials. It is also memory, behavior, ritual, movement, intimacy, identity, sound and time. A public space is not only an urban-design project. It may also be a social environment, a technological interface, a climatic response and an emotional experience.

Because of this, I believe the future of design education must teach students not only how to master a discipline, but how to travel beyond it.

The idea behind Transdisciplinary Design: Learning to Think Between Worlds comes directly from the way I have developed many of my own projects. I rarely begin by deciding what the architecture should look like. I am more interested in discovering the principle that could generate the architecture.


An inspiration may come from a movement, a natural phenomenon, a piece of music, a technological possibility or something as simple as the way light falls on a surface. The important question is not, “How can I make architecture that looks like this?” The more interesting question is, “What is actually happening here?”


Once we understand the deeper action, the original inspiration can be translated rather than copied. Movement can become geometry. Rhythm can become spatial sequence. Light can become organization. Repetition can become structure. Transformation can become kinetic architecture.

This is where transdisciplinary thinking becomes powerful. One discipline does not simply decorate another. It changes the way the other discipline thinks.


The DNA of a Home: Music, Dance, Technology and Architecture

A good example is my project The DNA of a Home, where architecture was explored through music, dance, movement and technology. Instead of approaching the home as a fixed object, I became interested in the possibility of understanding it as something that could change.

Music exists through time. A musical composition is not experienced in one frozen moment. It develops through rhythm, repetition, variation, tension and release. Dance is similar. A dancer does not create meaning through one position alone, but through the transitions between positions.


Human life inside a home also changes constantly. We work, rest, meet, separate, celebrate, eat, sleep, concentrate and communicate. Yet most architecture remains relatively static despite the fact that our lives are dynamic.

When these worlds begin to meet, a different architectural question emerges. Instead of asking only what a home should contain, we can ask how a home might behave.

Technology can then become more than a collection of devices placed inside a building. It can become part of the architectural language itself. Walls may move, boundaries may change, spaces may expand or contract, and different configurations may respond to different activities.

The result is an understanding of architecture as choreography. Music contributes ideas of rhythm and sequence, dance contributes movement and transformation, technology makes responsiveness possible, and architecture becomes the physical field in which these different systems meet.

That is what I mean by transdisciplinary design. The disciplines do not remain separate. They create a new condition together.


Light Drops in Helsinki: When Light Becomes a Generator

In Light Drops in Helsinki, the relationship moves toward architecture, atmosphere, materiality and light. Light is normally considered something that enters architecture after the building has already been designed. I became interested in reversing this relationship.

The behavior of light contains an extraordinary vocabulary. Light concentrates, diffuses, reflects, penetrates, disappears, creates gradients, produces shadows and changes throughout the day. Each of these actions can become an architectural principle.

A drop of light can become an opening or a spatial focus. A gradient can become depth. Reflection can become material. Transparency can create changing relationships between interior and exterior. Repetition can generate a field rather than a single architectural object.

The important step is the transformation from phenomenon into principle. I do not believe inspiration should be copied literally. A designer should search for the hidden rule inside the inspiration and then allow that rule to generate something new.

This method appears repeatedly in the way I teach design. An observation can become a sketch. The sketch can reveal a pattern. The pattern can become a diagram. The diagram can become a three-dimensional rule. The rule can become a model, and eventually that model can develop into architecture.

By the end of the process, the original inspiration may hardly be visible, but its DNA remains embedded in the project.


The Sunsetarium: Designing Perception

Another example is The Sunsetarium, which exists at the intersection of architecture, urban design, light, technology, landscape and human experience. Here, the starting point is not a conventional program but a phenomenon almost everyone understands: watching the sunset.

A sunset is not architectural. It belongs to astronomy, atmosphere, perception, emotion and culture. Yet it can become the generator of an architectural experience.

The project asks how a place could be designed around the act of observing changing light. Architecture can frame the horizon. Urban design can organize how people gather. Materials can react to changing color. Technology can intensify or extend the perception of light. The movement of the sun can even become part of the spatial organization.


This changes the role of architecture. Instead of creating an object that people simply enter, we create an instrument for experiencing something.

Time becomes part of the design. Light becomes part of the design. The position of the viewer becomes part of the design. Even the collective act of people gathering to observe a natural event becomes part of the architecture.

For me, this is one of the most important possibilities of transdisciplinary thinking. It allows us to move from designing objects toward designing relationships and experiences.

From Inspiration to Meaning

Many of the ideas behind my books, courses and teaching methods are connected to this same process. I often encourage students to begin not with form, but with meaning.

An inspiration becomes interesting only when we ask what it means to us. Two people can observe the same phenomenon and create completely different projects because interpretation is personal.


A flower may suggest growth to one person and fragility to another. A railway line may suggest movement, separation, connection or repetition. A shadow may become a study of absence, time or transformation.

The creative process therefore requires interpretation before design.

This is also why I am interested in questions, rather than only answers. The quality of a project often depends on the quality of the question that generated it. If the question is predictable, the result is often predictable. If the question opens an unexplored territory, the design process becomes an act of discovery.

The designer becomes less like someone who produces solutions and more like a discoverer who reveals possibilities that were previously invisible.


The Transdisciplinary Mind

This connects strongly with an idea that appears throughout my thinking: the future designer must learn to recognize relationships between things that appear unrelated.

Architecture can learn from music without becoming a musical building. Architecture can learn from dance without becoming a representation of a dancer. Architecture can learn from biology without simply copying the shape of a plant.

What matters is the principle behind the other discipline.


Music may teach us about rhythm, intensity and time. Dance may teach us about movement, balance and transition. Biology can teach adaptation and growth. Film can teach sequence and narrative. Psychology can help us understand perception and behavior. Technology can create new forms of responsiveness. Philosophy can help us question assumptions that design normally takes for granted.

The transdisciplinary designer constantly asks what one field can teach another.

This ability requires curiosity. It also requires a certain intellectual freedom, because crossing disciplines means entering areas where we are not experts. Instead of being afraid of not knowing, we need to develop the confidence to explore.

Expertise remains important, but curiosity allows expertise to evolve.


Future Learning in the Age of Artificial Intelligence

I believe this way of thinking will become increasingly important because artificial intelligence is changing the relationship between human beings and knowledge.

For centuries, education was largely based on the transfer and accumulation of information. The teacher possessed knowledge and transferred it to the student. The student demonstrated learning by remembering, understanding and applying that knowledge.

Today, access to knowledge is becoming almost instantaneous. AI can explain theories, provide references, analyze information, generate alternatives and assist with technical processes at extraordinary speed.


This does not make learning less important. It changes what learning must become.

The central question is no longer only how much a student knows. We increasingly need to ask what the student can imagine, connect, interpret and create with what is available.

Can they identify a relationship that has not been recognized before? Can they combine ideas from distant fields? Can they ask an original question? Can they recognize potential inside something ordinary? Can they use technology without allowing technology to define the limits of their imagination?

These questions are much closer to creativity than memorization.

This is also connected to my concept of Homo Somniator, the human who dreams. As machines become increasingly capable of processing knowledge, the unique value of the human being may shift toward imagination, meaning, intuition, curiosity and the capacity to envision possibilities that do not yet exist.


Teaching Students to Translate Between Worlds

In my teaching and courses, I therefore try to slow down the moment before the final design begins. Students often want to jump quickly toward a building, an object or a finished visual result. I am more interested in the stages that come before it.

First we observe. Then we investigate. We ask what is actually happening inside the phenomenon that attracted our attention. We interpret it personally and begin extracting rules.


Perhaps the principle is expansion. Perhaps it is compression, repetition, erosion, fragmentation, connection, accumulation, movement, tension, balance or transformation.

Once the principle becomes clear, we begin translating it into another language.

The principle may become lines. The lines may become surfaces. The surfaces may become volumes. The volumes may create relationships, and those relationships may eventually become space.

At every stage, the student must return to the original question and ask whether the project still expresses the meaning that generated it.

This process teaches much more than architecture. It teaches students how ideas evolve.


The Space Between Disciplines

When I look across my work, from Light Drops in Helsinki to The DNA of a Home, The Sunsetarium, my architectural projects, books, creative exercises and educational ideas, I recognize the same recurring interest.

I am interested in the space between disciplines.

That space is often difficult to define because it does not completely belong to any existing category. But precisely because it is less defined, it contains possibility.

Innovation often appears when two existing systems meet and create a third condition. Architecture and dance produce something neither architecture nor dance could produce alone. Light and technology create a new form of spatial experience. Biology and design generate new rules for adaptation. Philosophy and architecture allow us to reconsider what a building is expected to do.

The purpose of transdisciplinarity is therefore not to accumulate disciplines. It is to create meaningful relationships between them.


From Specialist to Visionary

The future will still need specialists. We will continue to need excellent architects, engineers, scientists, artists, programmers, doctors, designers and researchers.

But the largest challenges we face do not respect professional boundaries. Climate change, artificial intelligence, new forms of cities, loneliness, aging populations, mobility, virtual environments, changing models of work and emerging technologies cannot be understood through one discipline alone.


We therefore need people who can maintain expertise while also seeing beyond it.

I believe education should help create those people.

We should teach students how to enter unfamiliar territories, how to collaborate with people who think differently and how to translate between different forms of knowledge. We should teach them that imagination and analytical thinking do not contradict each other. They strengthen one another.

The goal should not only be to create competent professionals. It should be to develop visionary human beings.

Designing the Future Between Worlds

Transdisciplinary design is ultimately a way of seeing.

It begins with the understanding that architecture does not have to start with architecture. A project might begin with a sound, a movement, a social behavior, a technological development, a philosophical idea, a flower, a sunset or a question.

What matters is what happens next.

The designer observes, extracts, interprets, translates and transforms. Something that belonged to one world begins generating possibilities in another.

This is the way I approach architecture, creativity, writing and education. It is also why I believe transdisciplinary learning will become increasingly important in the future.

The next generation should not be educated only to remain inside existing disciplines. They should also learn how to move between them.

They should learn how to look for the places where architecture meets music, where technology meets emotion, where science meets imagination, where art meets research and where one apparently unrelated idea suddenly transforms another.

The future will not be created only inside the disciplines we already know.

Much of it will be created in the spaces between them.
